Frequently Asked Questions

How long does training a service dog take?

That depends on a number of things. Meliora Service Dogs are trained to high standards. This training is specific to the team member (dog handler) and differs slightly for each person.  Our dogs are not simply trained to do a task, and then that task will work for any handler.  We often deal with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), traumatic brain injuries, etc.  So the initial training can be done prior to the team member getting their dog, but the real training starts when the dog is paired with the injured person, and that takes time - time that varies from person to person. But dogs are usually trained within about 2 years.

Why do Service Dog Vests say "Do Not Pet" or Do Not Distract?

The short answer is that the dog is meant to pay attention to their team member (Handler) and not to other people. If a dog is distracted, that can cause a lapse in the dogs attention and it could easily then miss something as important as an oncoming seizure in his Handler.
